Viagra May Increase Skin Cancer Risk

Viagra May Increase Skin Cancer Risk

Erectile dysfunction is common. Luckily, there are many helpful treatment options available, one being ED medication. But a new study has those who take sildenafil, sold commercially as Viagra and Revatio, may suffer a serious downside. It could increase the risk of melanoma, according to a new German study. And not just any skin cancer but the deadliest variety, melanoma. Researchers at the University of Tübingen made this discovery. They found that sildenafil caused a skin cancer tumor to grow more rapidly.

Studies into whether or not sildenafil acts as a catalyst for skin cancer has been the subject of debate for some time. One 2014 U.S. study including 15,000 men saw an increased risk of melanoma. A 2015 Swedish study with 24,000 participants made the same correlation. Yet, these did not establish a cause and effect dynamic only that a relationship exists. They also couldn’t rule out whether or not participants took part in dangerous activities such as sunbathing.

This study however, made the connection between taking the medication and the increased growth of malignant melanoma. According to researchers, sildenafil affects cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). This is a messenger molecule which promotes skin cancer tumor growth. It doesn’t cause the cancer but ramps up its development. German researchers arrived at these conclusions through animal studies with human cultures in a lab. Professor Robert Feil was the author of this study. He said that they discovered the signaling pathway of malignant melanoma’s growth. This may one day lead to a novel cure.

The body’s cells normally produce a certain enzyme to break down cGMP. But sildenafil inhibits this enzymes production, allowing the cancer to grow more vigorously. Even so, researchers say men should not refrain from taking sildenafil or other ED drugs on occasion.  Feil said more research must be done to understand this phenomenon better. Those men who are experiencing ED should talk to a doctor or urologist and find out all about the issue, and what is causing it. A significant even life-threatening condition may be at fault. What’s more, there are multiple treatment options available for every cause. Find out what is right for your case.
