How do you like to sleep? Do you retire in your jammies, curl up in your boxers, or do you sleep in the buff? Researchers have known for some time that boxers are the preferred underwear for those concerned about their sperm count. Science shows us that high temperatures in the testes can harm sperm, sending your fertility into decline. However, a new study finds that men who sleep completely unclad may be more fertile.
Boxers or Briefs?
Scientists at the US National Institute of Child Health and Human Development conducted a study wherein researchers looked at DNA damage to sperm. They compared the quality of sperm in men who wore boxer shorts during the day and nothing to bed, versus those who wore tight underwear day and night. Dr. Katherine Sapra, head of the study, said that men of fertile age should be aware of what underwear they wear, both during the day and at night.
Over the course of a year, the scientists in this study observed 500 male participants, a relatively small sample. They noted each man’s choice of underwear and also evaluated the health and quality of their sperm. Men who slept naked or wore boxers to bed had 25% less DNA damage to their sperm compared to those who wore tight briefs.
Keeping Things Cool
Still, the question begs: Is it definitive that switching to looser boxers even after having worn tight briefs could affect a man’s fertility? A question whose answer remains a mystery. Of course, there is little risk in changing the type of underwear you wear. Even if accustomed to briefs, switching to boxers is not difficult. Ultimately, it simply has to do with temperature. Keep the testicles cool and the sperm will be healthy.
